There were a couple of songs I missed, such as Fire Lake, and may go back and buy some other albums, but this definately works when you want to hear Seger. Bob has an amazing catalog of great songs and great hits. This CD is a good collection of rock and roll. Some songs are okay ("Like A Rock" I think I heard too often on commercials, so it is not one of my favorites, but it is still okay). But so many of the others are simply steller - "Against The Wind," I always liked the lyric revolving around the title, and "Turn The Page" this record has enough to satisfy most fans.
Bob Seger is a one-in-a-million artist, passionate, sexy, torchy, and reminiscent of that "Old Time Rock and Roll" while managing to one-up most of it. On the other hand, his passionate vocals bring out the inner ramblin' man inside me, a deep-seated, testosterone-fueled yearning to hit the road and leave your life behind and all its burdens. I love this CD, could listen to it all day, and want more. As a woman, I've always found Seger's lyrics amusing. Only Bob could make a pickup line sound like a torchy love song ("We've Got Tonight").
But it's A-level background music, perfect for a road trip or a summer barbecue or a game of pool. It's not the kind of CD that you would sit down and focus on for fifty minutes; the music is just a little too generic and the lyrics are just a little too straightforward. So if you want catchy, driving background rock, give this album a shot; if you want something a little deeper, check out Seger's "Night Moves" album, which does reward focused listening. I don't think that it matters which songs were included and which left out, but whether this disc holds together as an album. And it does- to an extent.
Even for a mild Seger fan, it is difficult to imagine anyone not being able to sing along with the majority of these songs. This CD is a testament to how eminently likeable these songs are and how relatable Bob Seger was and is to the average American. Many have noted previously that some of Seger's masterworks are not included on this album and there is no arguing the truth in that. Between Night Moves, Roll Me Away and Hollywood Nights you have three of the greatest driving songs ever made.Seger is good old fashion piano driven rock and roll with a blue collar heart. A great place to start a Seger collection. While many of those missing songs were put on Volume 2, this greatest hits record is 13 great cuts. And In Your Time. The album is mainly a tribute to your radio friendly Seger songs that you hear on any classic station.
Seger is just a cool guy, nothing more to say. Bob Seger has a great voice - we all know that but I was disappointed with this greatest hits collection. Not all of his classics are featured here but thank goodness for Night Moves, We've Got Tonight, and Turn the Page are here.
